DIVERSITY & RELIGION EXHIBITION

Get The Trolls Out! is organising an exhibition of artworks exploring the theme of ‘Diversity & Religion’ in collaboration with the University of Westminster Diversity and Inclusion Research Community.

Open Call

The Get the Trolls Out! project, led by the Media Diversity Institute, has been monitoring media in seven European countries, noticing an increasingly concerning distribution of antisemitic and Islamophobic visual and video media. Our planned exhibition, in collaboration with the University of Westminster in London, is an attempt to counter this hateful content by promoting human rights narratives about ‘Diversity & Religion’ in Europe.

Stage 1 – Open Call

Artists are encouraged to submit artworks related to the theme of Diversity & Religion in Europe. The detailed submission requirements are listed below, under two categories, Visual Artworks and Video Artworks. Deadline for receiving entries: Midnight GMT – Sunday 27th November 2022.

Stage 2 – Jury Panel

Submissions will be selected by a jury panel of experts in the field of anti-discrimination, media diversity, and arts. The jury panel will judge the visual and video artworks based on their contemporary relevance to the theme, creativity, aesthetic quality, comprehensibility and impact of the message. Selected artists will receive a fee for their participation. Entrants will be notified about the outcome by Friday 16th December 2022.

Stage 3 – Exhibition, Launch Event, Publication and Online Promotion

The selected visual artworks will be displayed at a week-long exhibition at the University of Westminster, in London, in February 2023. A launch event will open the exhibition, with the screening of the selected video artworks, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A. The selected visual artwork will be featured in a publication which will be distributed at the launch event, posted to all selected artists, and made available online. All the chosen artworks will be also spotlighted on the Get the Trolls Out! website and promoted on related social media accounts, including the ones of our partner organisations in Europe.

Eligibility

Artworks must relate to the theme of Diversity & Religion in Europe.
Submissions are open for artists of any nationality who are residents of one of our project countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Poland or the UK. In order to receive the participation fee, it is necessary to have a bank account registered in one of these countries.
Applicants can be of any age, however, artists under the age of 18 need to provide their parent’s or guardian’s permission.
Submissions by artists from a minority background, with or without professional experience, are strongly encouraged.
Employees of any of our partner or funder organisations are not eligible to apply.
Submitted artwork may be produced specifically for this open call or may have previously produced and published elsewhere.
Each applicant can submit a maximum of seven works across both categories (up to five visual artworks, and two video artworks).
Deadline for submissions is Midnight GMT - Sunday 27th November 2022.

Visual Artworks – Submission Requirements

The visual artwork may be paintings, drawings, mixed media, collages, photographs, illustrations, graphic designs or cartoons.
Visual artworks can include text in languages other than English, however, a translation of the text in English must be provided in the artwork’s description.
A total of 25 visual artworks will be selected by our jury panel and featured on our website gallery, promoted on our social media, displayed in the exhibition, and included in the publication – artists must give us permission for their submitted artwork to be used for these purposes.
The selected visual artworks will be printed and framed to be displayed in an exhibition in cooperation with the University of Westminster in London. For this reason, we ask for digital designs or high-quality digital scans of original artworks (we cannot transport and display original artworks).
Artists whose visual artwork is selected will receive a fee of £150 per selected piece.
To submit an entry, artists are asked to include their bio and a description of the artwork(s) in English, along with a file of the visual artwork(s).
Each artist can submit up to 5 artworks.
The deadline for submissions is Midnight GMT - Sunday 27th November 2022.

Video Artworks – Submission Requirements

The video artworks may be animations, performance, creative or documentary style videos.
The videos should not be longer than 10 minutes.
Videos which are not produced in English language, must have English subtitles.
A total of 6 videos will be selected by our jury panel, featured on our website gallery, promoted on our social media and screened at the launch event at the University of Westminster – artists must give us permission for their submitted artwork to be used for these purposes.
Artists whose video artwork(s) is selected will receive a fee of £350 per selected piece.
To submit an entry, artists are asked to include their bio and a description of the video in English, along with a link to the video. If selected, artists will be required to provide an MP4 file of the selected video.
Each artist can submit up to 2 videos.
Deadline for submissions is Midnight GMT - Sunday 27th November 2022.

Working with partners across Europe, Get The Trolls Out! counters hate speech through exposing individuals and organisations, finding and debunking dangerous narratives in the media, and educating young people how to spot and respond to online trolls.
